Epitaphs and Eulogies: Are You Leaving Your Footprint?
Wow, heavy commentary to start with, right? Thinking about your epitaph and eulogy may seem a bit morbid, but it’s definitely a “think ahead” type of situation. What would you want people to remember about you?
I have been a daughter, friend, neighbor, family member, partner, spouse, co-worker, etc. But those are all things concerning who I am to others. Who am I to myself? What do I like about the person I have chosen to become?
At a certain age it does become a choice, to no longer be molded by those around you, but to take part in the molding of yourself.
Okay, still a little heavy.
Here’s what I want people to remember:
I’m a creative writer who believes in writing things that stir the pot and get people thinking. I’m a podcast co-host who’s not afraid to tackle challenging topics and difficult conversations.
I’m also pretty funny – a documented fact if you ask the right people. I can also dance and sing, not necessarily at the same time but I’m working on it.
I love challenging the status quo, I’m a conscious non-conformist, and could easily live without tv, sports, and fried food. Sorry, not sorry.
I want to write my story and I want to write for others so they can communicate who they are and what they’re contributing to the world. Not what their parent, best friend, or partner would say, but what they think is magnificent about themselves. In their bold voice through their dynamic perspective, so they can pull the right people towards them – the ones they can serve to the best of their unique and incredible ability.
Recently at the Women in Business Summit at Harvard Business School, I heard things we as women constantly hear:
Be kind
Be different
Ask for what you want
Invite everyone to the table
Be yourself 100% of the time
Watch how you talk to yourself
Trust yourself more than anyone else
It’s okay to say you don’t know the answer to a question
These are from women who have found success and are telling us it works. Women who owned their magnificence and told everyone about it. They are saving seats at the table for us and waving us in.
So why aren’t we doing these things consistently if there’s proof that it works?
You may have plenty of answers to this that you’re working through. I hope you keep working because the world needs what each of us has to offer independently, not a bunch of us offering the same safe, general things. Don’t be generic.
March is Women’s History Month
It’s not just about past history. It’s about every woman who chooses to make history on some level-past, present, or future. In your own life or the life of your family, community, country, or the world.
Now, I have questions.
What footprint are you leaving? Where will your footprint step out in front of the others to lead the way for those who hesitate? What will you do to add to the rich history of women? And what the heck are you waiting for?
I’d love to know what story you need to write to reach the right audience. Schedule a call here.
