Here’s the thing. If you want your business to be successful, you have to talk about it and promote it. When you talk about it, you have to be clear about what you say, and confident in what you do. And if you want potential clients to think you’re confident in your abilities you need to communicate that way, verbally and in writing.

But speaking up about ourselves is complicated. As solo-preneurs and small business owners, we spend a lot of time alone, and we can spend some of that time beating ourselves up. Then when we hear other business owners talk so eloquently about their passions, with mission statements, elevator pitches and taglines, we sometimes question what exactly it is we think we’re doing, anyway.

If you don’t sound like you believe in your talents and how they benefit others, how can you expect someone else to believe it?

Truth: It takes time to figure out who you are, explain what you do, and realize who you are targeting. But if you craft some solid, engaging statements about your business, and you practice them, you will have people in awe of how well you speak about what you do. You can always edit or change these statements as you and your business evolve but you have to start somewhere.

Practice:  In the car, in the mirror getting ready in the morning or in front of someone you trust. Say it in your head in line at the grocery store. It’s not that you won’t get nervous when you present your pitch, but you will be prepared to do it when you are nervous.

Get to know clearly, with the utmost of detail, what your individual talents are and why they’re unique compared to another business person offering similar services. The language we use is such a crucial part of how people see us and so is how we present that information. The only person who really understands what your magic is, is you.
